History
history
Roberts Place was established in the year 1990 on Tavewa Island; the home of Coralview Island Resort today. Owner Don Bruce was pursuing a career in civil engineering on mainland but decided to return to Tavewa one day. This was a major shift that determined his career change but Mr. Bruce had a dream to put together and never looked back. With the struggles of remote island living he was motivated to make big changes and that, he did. To develop the land, improve standards of living and utilize the natural resources on the grounds; he was convinced he had to venture into tourism. Don Bruce was assisted by his dad, Robert. That was how Uncle Roberts' Place got his name for the first 3 years but it was not officially registered until 1993 as Coralview Island Resort. The resort's first boat, named "Tai Te" was powered by a 5 Hp outboard. The trip would actually took a good 12hrs to travel to mainland from Tavewa on weekly runs; mastered by Don himself with one hand on the throttle and the other on the bailer the whole running time. The travel, though lengthy but full of expectations of adventure by guests would cost them $10FJD at that time and area 'night only' transfers, or passengers would be cooked under the hot sun.The major inspiration came from Don's family background; Nana,Uncle Tom and Dad Robert who fished for a living while relying on copra at the same time as the only source of income. The change was for the better but the works came down hard; long hours, years of patience,a great deal of tolerance for all the hiccups they pick up along the way and not to mention a costly project that includes a distance of a little over 90 kilometers of each way from Lautoka Fisheries Wharf. Imagine the freight cost for carting building materials and supplies annually!Coralview Island Resort now boasts 14 Deluxe Bures, an exclusive massage bure, 2 x 20 beds dorm bures apart from one that's still on it's way to completion and an administration building consisting of resort office, island boutique, island bar, guest lounge, a large-spacious dining room, guest kitchen, stores and a cutlery corner. With Dive Yasawa Lagoon joining our Resort it was another boost to our operations and also a major achievement.Powered by a 25KVA & 30KVA generator sets that work alternatively, the resort serves her guest on 24hour power, hygienically prepared rainwater for drinking and borehole water pumped to mini reservoirs that feed on bure and staff amenities for daily use. The resorts existence has benefited the neighboring islands in terms of employment, contributions to village assistance in education, church growth and improvements to the Nacula cultural and social community networks. With 100 guests on full house, Coralview is still building, erecting new structures, modifying and affirming existing ones, improving ground facilities, lifting service standards, learning from mistakes but most of all extending big hearty smiles to guests with true Fijian Hospitality. This is a slice of our story and we look forward to helping make yours on a Coralview holiday.
